Ghana Medical Trust Fund Drives Critical Upgrade of Catheterisation Lab at Korle Bu’s National Cardiothoracic Centre

Accra, Ghana ; Restoration works on the Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are advancing under the supervision of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, in a move designed to reinforce specialised cardiac services nationwide.

The intervention, undertaken through the Fund’s Mahama Cares initiative, is focused on reviving and upgrading the facility to expand its capacity for critical heart procedures. Once completed, the refurbished laboratory is expected to significantly reduce waiting times for urgent cardiac interventions and improve outcomes for patients requiring advanced diagnostic and interventional care.

To monitor progress and ensure timelines are being met, the Fund’s Administrator, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, conducted a working visit to the Centre. She was accompanied by Adann Benjamin Diaz, Chief Executive Officer of ADB Ghana Medicals Limited, where they engaged engineers and technical teams overseeing the works.

Project leads confirmed that decommissioning of outdated systems and preparatory structural adjustments are currently in progress; a crucial stage that will allow for the installation, testing, and calibration of upgraded equipment. These enhancements are intended to support a broader range of complex cardiac procedures at the facility.

According to the Fund, coordination with hospital management and technical partners remains ongoing to maintain strict adherence to safety, engineering, and medical standards. The project is on track for completion by the end of March.

Describing the restoration as a vital investment in Ghana’s health system, the Administrator reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to sustained oversight, noting that hands-on supervision will continue until the laboratory is fully operational.
